How to move to Norway

Norway, renowned for its stunning landscapes and high quality of life, is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) and part of the Schengen Area. This means that immigration procedures vary depending on your country of origin. Let me break down how you can move here.

Immigration Procedures for EU/EEA Citizens:

As an EU/EEA citizen, you have the right to live, work, and study in Norway. You can stay in Norway for up to three months without registering. If you plan to stay longer, you must register with the police. This process involves obtaining a D-number, a temporary identification number used for various services like opening a bank account or signing contracts.

To stay beyond six months, you must belong to one of these categories: an employee, self-employed, family member, full-time student, have your own funds, or be employed by a foreign company. If you are a student or are here on your own funds, you must have health insurance.

Immigration Procedures For Non-EU/EEA Citizens

Non-EU/EEA citizens planning to move to Norway must secure an appropriate residence permit before arrival. The type of permit required depends on the purpose of your stay, such as work, studies, or family reunification. Here's an overview of the process

If you’re moving to Norway from outside the EU/EEA, there are several important factors to consider. First, you will need a residence permit, which must be approved before you arrive. The type of permit depends on your reason for moving—work, studies, or family reunification.

Financial requirements also vary depending on your permit type. You may need to show proof of income, savings, or a job offer. Some permits require an employer or family member in Norway to sponsor you.

Visa rules differ by country. Some nationalities need a visa just to visit Norway, while others can enter visa-free but still need a residence permit to stay long-term.

Language and integration are also key factors. While many Norwegians speak English, learning Norwegian will help with daily life and job opportunities.

Below, you’ll find specific guidance based on your country of origin.

Moving to Norway from United States and Canada:

Work Permits: Citizens from the U.S. and Canada must secure a residence permit to work in Norway. This typically requires a job offer from a Norwegian employer, and the position should meet certain criteria, such as being a skilled role with a salary that aligns with Norwegian standards. The application process involves submitting documentation like your employment contract, proof of qualifications, and evidence of financial means. It’s advisable to apply well in advance, as processing times can vary.

Study Permits: If you’re planning to study in Norway, you’ll need a residence permit for studies. This necessitates an admission letter from a recognized Norwegian educational institution, proof of sufficient funds to cover living expenses, and valid health insurance. Students are generally allowed to work part-time during their studies.
